assistant manager

Sam MCLAIN

I’m Sam and am from Wisconsin originally but I got into mushing in Minnesota. I’ve been working with sled dogs for about 7 years. Now, Inuit dogs in Minnesota and now Alaskan Huskies. This past winter I worked for Skoohum Expeditions as a handler working for Lauro on many of his races and racing MY first race at the end of the season.

musher

Aiyana ferraro

Hello, my name is Aiyana and this summer will be my first season working with Alaska Icefield Expeditions; I am beyond excited. I grew up in Montana and was lucky enough to meet some local mushers in my area as a child, which inevitably led to starting my own kennel and running races in MT and the surrounding states. I just wrapped up an undergraduate degree in biology, and in my free time I like to hike, read, or practice some bird and plant ID-ing. Everyone who gets involved with dog sledding knows that it has a tendency to pull you back in, and after 10 years away I am definitely overdue for a comeback!

musher

Brenna Kiesling

Hi! My name is Brenna Kiesling. I’m 22 and was raised in Florida & KY. A few years ago I started my journey out West doing conservation work for our public lands. During this time, I fell in love with fire fighting and challenging myself. Last year, when my woodland fire fighting season ended, I decided to pursue my career as a musher near Vail, CO. I grew up on Balto and knew that ever since I was little I wanted to spend time as a musher and maybe race one day. I am continuing to follow my dreams of being a musher by being up in AK this summer. I’ve spent time working in the deserts and forests, so I am excited to spend time on the Herbert Glacier! In my free time I love rock climbing, surfing, snowboarding, and working out. I am also working on my sky diving certification!

musher

melissa purfield

Originally from Pueblo Colorado, I nurtured my love for the outdoors, animals, and adventure as a young adult while I studied conservation at CSU. I worked with wolves and wolfdogs for over 4 years, spent any downtime wandering the local mountains and forests, and spent 6 months restoring an abandoned trail for a conservation corps in remote Alaska. Naturally, Dog Camp was the perfect place for me to end up. I find the world of sled dogs enthralling and addictive; less than a year later I adopted my first sled dog and the love of my life Waylon Jennings. Two years later it became my full-time job working at dog camp in the summer and guiding tours for a former Iditarod musher in the winter. I’m looking forward to my 4th summer on the ice with good dogs, good people, and good views.

musher

Brent wester

Growing up in Colorado, I spent all my free time exploring the outdoors with my furry companions. After graduating college, I decided to continue pursuing my outdoor explorations where I fell in love with the beauty of Alaska and the thrill of dog mushing. After a brief stint back home, where I was working conservation jobs and mushing outside of Vail, CO, I am excited to return to Juneau and work for AIE on the Herbert Glacier!

musher

Dallin Rhodes

Hey, my name is Dallin Rhodes and I grew up in Utah. I love working cool jobs and being in nature. I got into dog mushing in early 2025 and have been working with sled dogs ever since. I enjoy reading, traveling, and meeting new people. I am ecstatic to work on the Herbert Glacier this season!

musher

Delta smith

Hi, my name is Delta and this is my second season mushing on the Herbert Glacier! I’m originally from Texas, and after graduating college I decided to convert a van and travel around. I ended up in Jackson, WY where I was introduced to the world of mushing! This winter I”m hoping to get into the world of racing. In my free time I enjoy hiking, snowboarding, and reading. This has been a once in a lifetime experience for me and I’ve loved every part of it.!

musher

Kendra anderson

Kendra has been mushing since 2022, splitting her time between Grand Maris, MN and the Herbert Glacier in Juneau, AK. She is ecstatic to spend another summer on the glacier with her four legged friends from Sawtooth Racing. She runs these dogs all year round, training for mid distance races, giving tours, and finding all sorts of (mis)adventures everywhere they go. Whether you meet Kendra and the dogs in Grand Marais or Juneau, they will be very excited to meet you!
